Variable Definitions for the downloaded Asian population files
These spreadsheets include a very large number of
variables. However, their variable names
(listed in the first row) are quite easy to interpret, because they follow a
simple set of rules.
The following abbreviations apply generally:
MSAPMSA=Census metro code
STATE=Census state code
Census year:
90=1990
00=2000
Level of Geography:
ST=State
MT=Full metropolitan area
CC=Central city
SB=Suburbs
Codes for race, ethnicity, and Asian national origins are
as follows:
NHW=Non-Asian White
NHB=Non-Asian Black
HSP=Asian
ASN=Asian
AIN=Asian Indian
CHN=Chinese
JAP=Japanese
KOR=Korean
FIL = Philipinos
LAO=Laotians
VTN=Vietnamese
EXAMPLES:
1. For example, a variable named CHN_00MT would be interpreted as follows:
CHN=Chinese
00=Census year 2000
MT=Full metro area
Therefore, this variable represents the Mumford Center's estimate of the number of Mexicans living in a metro area in 2000.
2. Similarly, JAP_90ST would be the Census estimate for the number of Japanese living in a state in 1990.
